Sunday Roast Review: The Griffin Amersham
Sunday Roast Review: The Griffin Amersham
Introduction
There is something undeniably comforting about a Sunday roast. The aromas of slow cooked meat, golden potatoes, and rich gravy create the kind of meal that feels like home yet indulgent at the same time. On our latest visit to The Griffin in Amersham, we discovered that this old fashioned pub with its blend of traditional charm and modern flair is serving one of the best roasts we have ever tasted. We had high hopes when we booked a late Sunday lunch at half past four, and by the end of the meal, we were left in no doubt: The Griffin deserves its reputation as a standout destination for roast lovers.
Ambience & Atmosphere
The Griffin strikes a perfect balance between heritage and contemporary style. On arrival, the pub greeted us with warm tones, rustic wooden details, and modern design touches that complemented the traditional setting. Our table this time was at the back, with lovely views overlooking the garden. Thanks to the open plan layout, we could also glimpse into the attic room, which adds to the charm and character of the space. It felt relaxed yet special, setting the perfect stage for a Sunday feast.
Arrival & Service
From the moment we stepped in, the service was welcoming and attentive. We were greeted immediately and shown to our table without fuss. Our waiter, Harry, is now becoming a familiar face. We have only visited three times, but he has served us each time with the same warmth and professionalism. His attention to detail and personal recommendations truly elevate the dining experience, and it is clear that regulars know they are in good hands with him.
The Roast Dinner Experience
We skipped starters this time, saving room for the main event. Both of us ordered the beef roast, which came as a duo of roast aged ribeye and slow cooked short rib. The flavours were exceptional: the ribeye juicy and tender, the short rib meltingly rich.
The roast was served with a generous selection of sides: crispy roast potatoes with fluffy centres, buttered savoy cabbage topped with mixed seeds, caraway glazed carrots, cheesy leeks, and of course, a golden Yorkshire pudding that was both light and crispy. Presentation deserves a mention. A small side desk was brought to the table, giving the waiter space to place all the trimmings within easy reach. It was both practical and added to the sense of occasion.
We did not even need to ask for extra gravy, as there was plenty to go around, but it is worth noting that everything was seasoned and sauced to perfection. I requested extra mustard, an essential for me, and it was happily provided without hesitation.
Wine Pairing
To accompany the meal, we chose a South African Chenin Blanc, one of our favourite varietals. Its crisp, fruity character paired beautifully with the richness of the beef and vegetables, cutting through the indulgence while enhancing every bite. The Griffin’s wine list is well considered, and this choice reaffirmed why we keep coming back.
A Special Touch
Halfway through the meal, curiosity got the better of us. Charlie asked about the suckling roast pork with crackling, and to our delight, Harry brought over a piece for him to try, complimentary. This small gesture summed up what makes The Griffin special: attentive service, generosity, and a desire to make every guest feel valued. The pork was excellent, crisp crackling, tender meat, and it is safe to say we will be ordering it on our next visit.
Desserts
Despite feeling satisfyingly full, the dessert menu was too tempting to resist. I opted for the strawberry pavlova with champagne strawberries, whipped cream, pistachio, and a touch of sherbet. It was a delightful balance of sweetness and texture, light yet indulgent. Charlie chose the sticky toffee pudding, a dish Harry personally recommended, and it did not disappoint. Rich, comforting, and beautifully executed, it rounded off the meal perfectly. We finished with coffees, lingering over the last moments of what had been a truly memorable Sunday lunch.
Pet-Friendliness
While Ada, our dog, did not join us this time, it is worth noting that The Griffin is pet friendly, with some conditions. Dogs are welcome during lunchtimes but only at the front of the pub. It is a thoughtful policy that allows pet owners to enjoy a meal out without compromising the comfort of other guests.
Final Verdict
The Griffin in Amersham has quickly become one of our favourite places for a Sunday roast. From the beautifully balanced atmosphere to the consistently excellent service and of course the unforgettable food, it delivers on every level. The roast itself was everything you hope for: tender meats, perfectly crisp potatoes, light Yorkshire puddings, and sides that were as carefully prepared as the main components. Add to that a great wine list, indulgent desserts, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like a valued regular, and you have a winning formula.
